Anhidrosis: When Your Horse Stops Sweating

When summer temperatures climb into the triple digits, a horse's ability to sweat is its first line of defense against the heat, and in hotter inland and desert areas like the Palm Springs region, that defense gets tested hard. Anhidrosis is the partial or complete loss of that ability, and it shows up more often in hot climates than many owners realize. A horse that can't sweat can't shed body heat efficiently, which puts it at real risk of overheating, heat exhaustion, and collapse. Any horse can develop it, but those working hard in the sun, horses recently moved from cooler regions, and animals already stressed by the heat are especially vulnerable.

Catching it early makes all the difference. The classic red flag is a horse that should be sweating but isn't. Dry skin after exercise or turnout while the rest of the herd is lathered up. Other signs include faster, harder breathing or flared nostrils as the horse tries to cool itself by panting, an elevated body temperature, a hot and dry coat, and sluggish performance. In longer-standing cases, you may notice patchy hair loss or flaky skin, often starting on the face. If you suspect anhidrosis, loop in your veterinarian. They can confirm it and rule out other heat-related trouble.

Managing an affected horse comes down to keeping it cool and replacing what it loses. Shift turnout and any work to the early morning or evening, and keep at-risk horses out of the midday sun entirely with shade, fans, and a good hosing-down when temperatures spike. Always offer plenty of cool, clean water and free-choice salt, and support mineral balance with AgriLabs Vitamin & Electrolyte Plus, which helps replace the sodium, potassium, and chloride a struggling horse burns through in the heat. Steady, palatable forage like Bermuda hay or Teff hay keeps nutrition and hydration on track, soaking it adds a little extra water into the bargain.

There's no one-size-fits-all cure for anhidrosis, but with early attention and the right summer routine, most horses stay comfortable and safe through the worst of it. Have questions about keeping your herd cool? Stop by or give us a call, we're here to help your ranch through every season.
