Protecting Horses and Livestock from December Chills

Thomas Brundy

In San Diego County's December chill (day highs 60s, nights 40s or lower), protect vulnerable livestock like horses, goats, and lambs from hypothermia and weight loss, especially young, old, or thin-coated ones. For horses: Use 600D Ripstop Waterproof Turnout blankets below 50°F (clipped/seniors) and 15-20 lbs Bermuda hay daily per 1,000-lb horse. Goats: Goat Blankets, dry bedding, group housing, and Electro Dex electrolytes to prevent pneumonia. Sheep/lambs: Sheep Blanket Mesh, grouping, clean corrals, and alfalfa feeds.
