Two weeks ago, the farm welcomed the bright and eager Calexico High School FFA members for a special day of learning. These students didn’t just visit a farm — they stepped into a story rooted in tradition, one that began decades ago when Tom himself was inspired by his father to continue the ranching way of life.
The students began their visit with breakfast burritos and donuts, then a short talk from Tom, where he shared the history of Tom’s Hay Farm and spoke about the virtues of farming and ranching. The day continued with a hay ride through the ranch, offering a firsthand look at the fields of Bermuda grass and cattle pastures. The group even came close to witnessing the birth of a calf!
Hosting the FFA students was about more than teaching the mechanics of farming; it was about planting a seed of inspiration. At Tom’s Hay Farm, we believe that farming and ranching are more than trades — they’re traditions that bind us to the earth and each other. By introducing these young minds to the importance of water management, sustainable practices, producing quality crops, and ranching, we hope to ignite a passion for preserving these essential skills.
In a time when fewer families remain tied to agriculture, it’s crucial to keep these traditions thriving. America’s farms feed not just the country but the world, and it’s the next generation who will carry that responsibility. By fostering their curiosity and respect for the land, we ensure that farming remains a vital and valued part of our nation’s identity. Here’s to the future of farming, built on a foundation of dedication, stewardship, and the wisdom passed down from those who came before.
