The Heart of Ranching: Calving Season

Here at the farm, the past couple of months have been filled with the excitement of new life as our cows have been calving, and the next few months promise even more arrivals. Calving isn’t just a season — it’s the result of months and years of planning and preparation. From carefully managing breeding schedules to ensuring the cows are in optimal health, every step of the process is designed to set both cow and calf up for success.

The calving process demands constant vigilance. We stay attentive 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, watching for signs of labor and stepping in to assist if needed. Whether it’s a smooth delivery or a challenging one, we are always ready to act, ensuring the safety of both the calf and its mother. It’s a tireless effort, but it’s worth every moment to see those healthy calves take their first steps.

Once the calves are born, the work doesn’t stop. We monitor their health, ensure they’re nursing properly, and protect them from the elements, especially during colder winter nights. Each new life on the farm is a testament to the care and dedication that goes into ranching—a lifestyle rooted in hard work and a deep respect for the animals we raise.

This season has been particularly special for us. So far, we’ve welcomed 302 calves to the farm, with 85 more expected in the coming months. Looking ahead, we’ve already been AI-ing our herd for a successful calving season later this year. Our goal is to breed our cattle to produce a superior quality meat, compared with anything you can find.

Each new generation is a part of the future we’re building here at Tom’s Hay Farm, and we couldn’t be prouder to share this journey with you. If you haven’t had the chance to see our cattle operation in action, be sure to ask for a tour the next time you’re here — we’d love to show you around!
